How It Works

Square Foot Gardening (SFG) was developed by Mel Bartholomew as a space-efficient way to grow more food in less area. Instead of planting in rows, you divide your raised bed into 1-foot squares, each planted with a specific number of plants based on their size.

Plants per square foot by plant size: Extra Large (1 per sq ft): Tomatoes, Broccoli, Cabbage, Peppers... Large (4 per sq ft): Lettuce, Kale, Basil, Strawberries... Medium (9 per sq ft): Bush Beans, Spinach, Beets, Garlic... Small (16 per sq ft): Carrots, Radishes, Onions, Parsley... Total squares per 4'x4' bed = 16 Total plants = sum of (squares × plants_per_sq_ft)

The SFG Method

Each 4'x4' bed contains 16 one-foot squares. The number of plants per square depends on the mature size of the plant. Large plants like tomatoes get a full square to themselves, while small plants like carrots can fit 16 in the same space. This method typically produces 5x more harvest per square foot than traditional row gardening.

Spacing Grid

  • 1 per sq ft (12" spacing): Indeterminate tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, peppers, eggplant, sunflowers
  • 4 per sq ft (6" spacing): Head lettuce, Swiss chard, kale, basil, rosemary, strawberries
  • 9 per sq ft (4" spacing): Bush beans, spinach, beets, turnips, garlic
  • 16 per sq ft (3" spacing): Carrots, radishes, green onions, parsley, cilantro, leeks
