How It Works

Our chicken feed calculator uses standardized daily feed intake rates based on breed type and age group. These values are derived from poultry science research and are widely used by commercial and backyard poultry keepers across the US.

Feed Conversion Ratios

Feed conversion ratio (FCR) measures how efficiently a chicken converts feed into body weight or eggs. Broilers are the most efficient, achieving FCRs as low as 1.5:1 — meaning 1.5 pounds of feed produces 1 pound of live weight. Layers require more energy for egg production, with typical FCRs around 2.0–2.5:1 for eggs.

Formula

Daily Feed (lbs) = Number of Chickens × Daily Feed Rate per Bird (lbs) Daily Cost ($) = (Daily Feed ÷ 50) × Price per 50 lb Bag Monthly Cost = Daily Cost × 30 Bags per Month = Monthly Feed ÷ 50
Pro Tip: Free-ranging chickens typically consume 20–30% less commercial feed during growing season when forage is abundant. Adjust your estimates downward if your flock has significant pasture access.
