How It Works

Our garden yield planner uses research-backed per-plant yield data drawn from university extension services, including Cornell, UC Davis, and Iowa State. Each vegetable has a published yield range per plant per growing season under normal conditions.

Yield Data Sources

Yield estimates vary based on variety, soil quality, climate, and management practices. Our ranges represent typical home garden yields, not commercial production. Heirloom varieties often produce less than modern hybrids but offer better flavor and seed-saving potential.

Formula

Average Yield (lbs) = (Min Yield + Max Yield) ÷ 2 × Number of Plants Total Garden Yield = Sum of Average Yield for all selected vegetables People Fed = Total Yield ÷ 200 (lbs/person/year)
Pro Tip: For a family of four, plan on 800–1,000 lbs of vegetables per year. A well-managed 500 sq ft garden can produce 200–400 lbs of vegetables in a single growing season.
