How It Works
Our plant spacing calculator uses standard spacing recommendations from university extension services and organic farming guides. Proper spacing is critical: too tight, and plants compete for nutrients and sunlight; too sparse, and you waste valuable growing space.
Square Foot vs. Row Gardening
Grid/Square Foot gardening uses equal spacing in all directions, maximizing yield in small spaces. Traditional row gardening spaces plants closer together within rows and leaves wider paths between rows for walking and cultivation. The row method is better for larger gardens and crops that need airflow (like tomatoes and squash).
Formula
Grid Pattern:
Plants = floor(Bed Width × 12 ÷ Spacing) × floor(Bed Length × 12 ÷ Spacing)
Row Pattern:
Plants = floor(Bed Width × 12 ÷ Plant Spacing) × floor(Bed Length × 12 ÷ Row Spacing)
Plants per 100 sq ft = (Total Plants ÷ Bed Area in sq ft) × 100
Pro Tip: For intensive planting, you can reduce spacings by 10–20% if you amend soil heavily with compost and use drip irrigation. But don't overcrowd — stressed plants are more susceptible to pests and disease.
