About Homestead Calculators
Free, research-backed tools built by homesteaders, for homesteaders.
Our Mission
We believe self-sufficient living should be accessible to everyone. Our mission is to provide free, accurate, and easy-to-use calculators that take the guesswork out of homestead planning — whether you're raising your first flock of chickens or designing an off-grid solar system.
Every tool on this site is designed to answer a single question well: How much do I actually need? No fluff, no sign-ups, no paywalls. Just practical numbers you can trust.
Our Story
Homestead Calculators started the way most homestead projects do — out of necessity. When we first started planning our own homestead, we kept running into the same problem: scattered information, contradictory advice, and a whole lot of guesswork.
How much feed does a flock of 12 laying hens actually go through in a year? How many gallons of rainwater can you realistically collect off a 1,200-square-foot roof? How big does a solar array need to be to run a chest freezer?
We built the calculators we wished we'd had — and decided to share them with the growing community of people choosing to live more independently.
How We Build Our Calculators
Every calculator on this site is grounded in real data and real experience. Our process includes:
- USDA Data: We reference U.S. Department of Agriculture standards for crop yields, livestock feed requirements, and growing zone information.
- University Extension Research: Land-grant university extension offices publish peer-reviewed guidance on everything from compost ratios to frost date averages — we incorporate their findings directly.
- Real Homesteader Feedback: We consult with experienced homesteaders to validate our assumptions and refine our outputs. If a calculator says you need 400 pounds of feed but every chicken keeper we talk to says it's closer to 350, we dig into the discrepancy and adjust.
- Ongoing Updates: Agriculture isn't static, and neither are we. We review and update our calculators regularly as new research becomes available.
Free & Ad-Supported
Homestead Calculators is completely free to use. We cover our costs through non-intrusive advertising. We will never ask you to create an account, pay for results, or hand over your email address. All calculations happen right in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
If you find our tools useful, the best way to support us is to share them with fellow homesteaders and consider visiting our sponsors.
