How It Works

Frost dates are based on 30-year climate normals from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. The "last spring frost" is the average date of the last 32°F freeze in spring, and the "first fall frost" is the average date of the first 32°F freeze in autumn.

Growing Season (days) = First Fall Frost − Last Spring Frost Spring Planting = Last Frost + 14 days (safety margin) Start Indoors = Last Frost − (weeks before frost × 7 days) Transplant = Last Frost + (weeks after frost × 7 days) Direct Sow = Last Frost + (weeks after frost × 7 days)

Why 30-Year Normals?

Climate data is averaged over 30 years to smooth out year-to-year variability. Your actual frost dates may vary by 1-2 weeks in any given year. Always harden off seedlings and watch the 10-day forecast before transplanting.
