How It Works

Our wine making calculator uses standard home winemaking ratios based on fruit type, desired sweetness level, and target alcohol content. These values are derived from established winemaking references and are widely used by home winemakers and small-scale vintners.

Juice Yield by Fruit Type

Different fruits yield different amounts of juice per pound. Grapes are the most efficient, producing roughly 150โ€“180 gallons of juice per ton (about 0.75โ€“0.9 gallons per 10 lbs). Soft fruits like strawberries yield less juice per pound due to their high fiber and water content structure.

Wine Style Residual Sugar Guide

Dry wines have less than 1% residual sugar, off-dry wines have 1โ€“2%, semi-sweet wines have 2โ€“5%, and sweet wines have 5% or more. The calculator adjusts sugar additions to account for both alcohol production and desired residual sweetness.

Pro Tip: Always test your must with a hydrometer before fermentation begins. Actual sugar content varies by fruit ripeness, growing conditions, and variety. Adjust sugar additions based on your hydrometer reading, not just estimates.
