How It Works
This calculator determines fencing materials based on standard spacing for each fence type. Posts are calculated differently depending on fence style:
Choosing the Right Fence for Your Livestock
🐔 Chickens & Poultry
Best: Poultry netting (1/2" or 1" mesh), welded wire. Electric netting for rotational grazing.
Height: 4–6 ft to deter predators climbing.
🐑 Sheep & Goats
Best: Woven wire (goats need 4" or smaller mesh), high-tensile electric (5-strand for goats).
Height: 4–5 ft. Goats climb — add electric top strand.
🐄 Cattle & Horses
Best: Barbed wire (3–5 strand), high-tensile electric, woven wire with top board for horses.
Height: 4–5 ft. Horses need visibility — use white ribbon or boards.
🐖 Pigs
Best: Hog panels (not climbers!), electric wire (they respect it after one shock).
Height: 3–4 ft. Pigs root under — bury mesh 6" or use electric apron.
🦌 Deer Protection
Best: Woven wire 8 ft tall, high-tensile 8–10 ft, or electric 8–10 ft.
Height: Minimum 8 ft. Deer jump high — go tall or use double fence.
🏡 Garden & Property
Best: Woven wire, polypropylene deer fence, or picket (decorative).
Height: 4–6 ft for garden, 3 ft for decorative picket.
