Compost Temperature Tracker
Track compost pile temperature to determine decomposition stage and get recommendations for turning, moisture, and maintenance.
Temperature Tracker
Insert thermometer 12–18 inches deep into the center of the pile.
Minimum effective size: 3x3x3 ft (27 cu ft)

How It Works
This tracker is based on research from USDA Extension Service and compost science. Temperature is the primary indicator of decomposition activity and pathogen destruction.
Compost Temperature Stages
- Mesophilic (below 104°F): Initial stage, slow decomposition
- Thermophilic (104–160°F): Active stage, pathogen kill zone
- Cooling (below 104°F after heating): Maturation stage
Pathogen Kill = Temperature ≥ 131°F for 3 consecutive days
Optimal Range = 130–150°F (balanced decomposition)
Turn Frequency = Every 3–7 days during thermophilic stage
